You don’t have knowledge about traditional lactation. I do.
Yes, women did nurse 24/7. Babies were carried all day. They slept next to their mothers at night. Traditional nursing patterns were very different from modern patterns. This is how babies were spaced — by frequent nursing. If you could count how many minutes per day and how many instances of nursing of a mother-baby from a traditional society vs a modern woman, you’d see dramatic differences. Lactational amenorrhea demands very frequent nursing. This is why women today — who don’t usually use a sling all day, who use pacifiers and bottles and may not sleep with their infants — typically have a return of fertility within a few months. (Women generally have higher body fat now, which also speeds a return of fertility.)
