You can learn a lot through reading, yes.
I have been a lifelong auto-didact, but formal schooling taught me how to evaluate and understand ideas and how to learn. My own study will forever be enhanced by that.
But learning through doing manual labor as a kid? That can help you learn things like responsibility and how to navigate a work hierarchy, yeah. I did a helluva lot of work when I was young because I needed to. A little of that is great but a lot of it is harmful.

In education circles, they do discuss different learning styles. Doing repetitive manual labor is not a learning style. I would recommend you talk to a teacher about what the different learning styles are. You have misunderstood that concept.
