When I was working at a newspaper, we did a story about parents who damned near lost custody but were eventually exonerated. It was a newborn with a complicated diagnosis and an image appeared to show a skull injury — but there was no skull fracture. The child moved slightly during the imaging, it was eventually decided. The parents had some means and were able to pay for imaging and evaluation elsewhere, and they had a supportive extended family that committed to being in the home 24/7 so the abuse investigators would let them have the kids at home. It was infuriating, and obviously, the happy ending might not have happened if they’d had fewer resources. It’s terrifying.
