We used to sit on our porch all the time, way back in the early ’90s. My first husband and I and our then-young kids didn’t have central air. We lived in a very mixed (racially and economically) neighborhood. My then-husband would play his guitar and the kids and I would enjoy the tiny breeze of the porch swing. The only other people who sat outside were a Black family. They were always having cookouts on theirs, always with tons of friends. The other white people sat inside their air-conditioned homes!
