We have been indoctrinated to take pride in being exploited. I did it for years. I bragged about the long hours I worked at a newspaper. I loved to talk about the time I came in at 5 a.m. and finished up at 3 a.m. the following day. Or the times I worked around the clock, taking short naps in the newsroom. Was I paid extra for this? No, I was on salary. I made the same shitty pay regardless. Did the company appreciate it? Hell no. When they were done with me, they kicked me to the curb, just as they did everyone there eventually. I finally saw that I'd allowed myself to be brutalized.
