We didn’t value the work women did in feeding their families. So when moms started working outside the home more, instead of men pitching in to cook, we had to outsource that job to food conglomerates. Hummus is not hard to make but it does require some fussing and a lot of cleanup. I once made an enormous batch to take to church, back when I went to one. It was the best hummus some of them had ever had, because I started from dried garbanzos. I served it with homemade pita. I seldom make these things from scratch now — mainly because the cleanup feels like too much.
