Instead of using an unobtrusive tag like “she said,” Jackson too often tells us that someone “hissed,” “snapped,” “cackled,” “muttered,” “snickered,” or “groaned.” Or we read that a character did the physically impossible and “smiled” or “grinned” a line, as in: “ ‘Really classy, Dar,’ Cord grinned.”
