Traditional nursing did space children considerably. (Not the type of sporadic nursing most women practice today, I will caution you.) Our ancient ancestors nursed as long as 7 years. It’s not so easy to hunt with a child in a sling, nursing. I can imagine a woman with an older child who wasn’t yet pregnant with the next child could do some hunting, as long as others cared for her other kids, but I very much doubt it was something they did routinely. MOST of a H-G tribe’s calories came from the gathering, not the hunting. And it’s much easier to gather than hunt while pregnant/nursing/carrying a child/watching an older child.
