In the early 1900s, American capitalism turned the Hope Chest into a product of mass consumption. In the 1920s, cedar chests were advertised as the “perfect graduation gift” for young women, because the logical next step after high school was, of course, marriage.

To this day, I have a tiny cedar chest all of us girls got free from a furniture store! In return, we filled out a form saying whether we were already engaged! AND THIS WAS IN 1984!
