There is a very large difference between online and print heds. Even newspapers usually use a different hed for the same story in the print and online versions. Print never has to consider SEO, for one thing. Also, print heds have to fit a specific length, and they're quite difficult to make fit into the layout. You don't have that problem online.
If you're holding a print publication in your hand, you already know certain things based on what publication you're holding and you're ready and intending to read. You only have to be tipped off a a bit. Online? You can't just say, "Local man found dead" as we used to. Local is meaningless.
Also, think of the different headlines I might have considered for this piece:
I should have started writing on Medium a year ago
Medium offers great earnings (that one sounds like print, right?)
Looking for a side hustle? Here's your answer
Here's how I make easy money every month
Read this if you want to make more money
Some are better than others, some are more click-baity. I try to be provocative but -- and this is vital -- never to make a promise in a hed that I can't keep in the story.
