The most I ever made in my entire life was $40K per year, while working long hours as the editor of a daily paper. My husband until recently made much less than that. Yet we own two houses. The answer is to live in an affordable area. We'd be screwed if we had to pay thousands of dollars for rent/mortgage each month. We're not far from having the mortgage on our primary house paid off.
