Yes, we Americans tend to see sex as dangerous. We've been taught to fear pregnancy and disease and being raped if you're not careful.

But yes, it's meant to be wonderful. Natuurlijk, it should not be seen primarily as a danger. (Are you from the Flemish or French side of Belgium?)

My husband's family is Dutch, but they've traced the family back to a small town in Belgium. One of his sisters lives in Belgium. What a beautiful place ... we dream of renting a small cottage there someday.
