Speaking as a former newspaper journalist: This happens constantly. And if your town has an ordinance on the books that allows your vehicle to be seized if even one passenger has contraband, you can get into very expensive trouble. You can be totally clean, but if the co-worker you give a ride home to has drugs or a knife (or gun!) you are screwed. You don’t need to have been aware of the contraband, either. By the time you pay the fine and all the impound fee, it’s enough to knock a lower-income person into homelessness. Saw this happen a lot in my small city.
