So, I used to be a newspaper editor. Sometimes I did research in the “morgue” — the room where old papers were kept. If you looked at papers from a few decades ago, you’d see ads from so many little local businesses — children’s shoes, women’s wear, men’s wear, sporting goods, household goods — all of which are long gone because Walmart provides all the goods that two dozen local stores would have sold. Each of those little businesses would support a family, sponsor a kid team, donate money to local charities, etc. The loss of local small businesses helped kill civic society, local news and just about everything else.
