Please let me be a cautionary tale: If I were not married, I'd either be homeless or in some other very bad place. No, I do not make anything like a comfortable living, and it's scary. In hindsight, I ought to have jumped ship (from newspapers) while I was still young enough to start over. I'm 58 now and my fate is sealed. Our old age is not looking good at all, frankly. The only good thing is I can keep writing on Medium and similar platforms for as long as my brain holds up and at least supplement our income, but I can't foresee ever being able to make enough to support myself. I wish I had better advice for you but all I can do is urge you to find something safe while you're still young. Make sure EVERYBODY you know understands that you're looking for a good position. I don't know why job sites even exist, because I don't know anyone who has landed a good job without knowing somebody; I certainly never have except in my very first post-college job -- not that that was a "good" job, but it did gain me contacts and every job since then has come about from people I have worked with at a previous job.

We live in a terrifying time.
