People ARE poor for a variety of circumstances, and most poor people are not stupid or lazy (or at least, no stupider or lazier than well-off people, who you must know are hardly all paragons of hard-work and intelligence.) I wrote a book called The Trailer Park Rules (not published yet) in which every poor person there is poor for a different reason.
