One little quibble with the book. In the last scene Rose of Sharon nursed the starving man. But she would not have had milk right after giving birth, only tiny bits of colostrum. I'm guessing Steinbeck might not have been very knowledgeable about lactation. Or maybe the futility of it was part of the message? It's been decades since I've read it.
