Older kids usually have at least some idea of what's happened. If Dad was cheating and left the family, it matters little how "kind and attentive" Dad is. The kids will resent what he did, and nobody can blame them. It's not that anybody is taking it out on the kids; it's that Dad was a lousy parent. The same is true if it was Mom who had an affair and left the kids.
