…eally will, and how long before those designed-to-be-shiny exteriors will inevitably dull and fade. Meanwhile, while our house is of an unknown age, my next door neighbour’s beam has the year it was used for construction engraved on it — 1547. And it still looks beautiful.

Oh, this is wonderful. My house dates back to 1897, which seems old in the U.S. Not so much in Europe!
