Most of us aren’t doing this on purpose, you know. I seldom meet people of color, because I live in a small town in Illinois that’s mostly white. Small towns without factories were not a draw for southern blacks who moved north for better lives. It’s not like I chose to live here for this reason; I was born in this state. We have one black neighbor — one. She and her husband just bought a house a couple blocks from here. But she’s from Barbados and is married to a white man, so she likely has an unusual story of how she ended up here. Maybe I’ll get to hear it eventually. But most people, I hope, do not set out to avoid people from other races.
