It's worth noting that your stay there was by choice -- it sounds like you could have moved to a better place at any time you chose to. If you live in a rat-infested shit-hole because you can't afford anything better, it's a different situation. However, I think since you didn't have children to worry about, you were smart to sit there and save money and bide your time.
