It's very important, for most, although I live in a very walkable neighborhood close to a grocery store, drug store, all city and county offices, etc. We could, with some difficulty, do with only one car. We have two cars from the days when we both had to drive somewhere to work daily. Now, only my husband does. But the car I drive is worth essentially nothing so we are keeping it for as long as it lasts.
