Interesting! I have this concept on my story list. This is the unedited note I wrote to myself:
A new way of seeing flag symbolism: the field of blue is a unified space with all states present and together. Blue states envision a national unity. Red states see themselves as separate entities. Those red lines separated from the others are symbols of red states seeing themselves as apart from others. If we all break apart, the right flags would be just red and white flags for the New Confederacy. The obvious New Union flag would be a blue field with however many stars. It would look much like the European Union flag, in fact.
What really happens every four years is we decide which country will rule over us. The New Confederacy or the New Union.
Basic philosophy of each really does have to do with a basis of individuality or community. Blues believe we are all in this together. Reds believe it’s every man (clan) for himself and nobody owes anybody anything.
