Income inequality is one of the subjects I turn to again and again. It's very uncomfortable to hear people blithely state -- to people who are doing everything possible to handle their money well -- that "everyone" can do certain things that are in reality not open to everyone at all.
I would say, "If you can possibly put even a small extra amount toward the principal, it can make a huge difference, especially in the early years of your mortgage."
I recall around 25 years ago, someone I knew said they were paying an extra $100 per month to pay their house off faster. I wanted so badly to do the same, but it was impossible. I could barely cover groceries.
I do pay extra now. I'm grateful I can. Paying interest absolutely slays me, but the goal IS near. I cannot wait to have no mortgage.
