In 1984, Orwell invented the concept of "Big Brother." So when everybody refers to Big Brother, they are referencing that book. It's a standard term. If Orwell had written about Big Sister, that's what we'd be saying today.

It's a great book. I highly recommend you read it. It predicted quite a bit of today's world.
