I’m not the expert you are, but I very much enjoy Russian literature without liking Russian leaders one bit. I read many of the great ones while on bed rest while pregnant. I was at a literacy group full of English teachers recently and none of them had read War and Peace!! I like Tolstoy enough to put a supposed quote by him on the cover of my book, The Trailer Park Rules. You might find it amusing!
