I’m an older Gen X who can’t relate; maybe bcz I’m older, or maybe bcz I grew up in a small town where trends didn’t reach me. I’ve never been able to understand the appeal of rap/hip hop — and no, I don’t understand the difference. I was under the impression that only country and top 40 existed, and reluctantly settled on the latter; I didn’t discover how great punk is until I was a nice mommy of toddlers. I missed out on being part of a unified trend.
