I'm interested in this topic. I have had a smooth cooktop stove for years but always hoped/planned to get gas when I could afford the upgrade. Now, I'm not so sure. Gas is better for cooking, but the way my kitchen is set up (stove not against an exterior wall) I'm not sure there's a practical way to vent it to the outside. I grew up with a gas cooktop that was not vented, but apparently that's not healthy at all.
