I went several years without spending on anything but groceries, household needs like laundry detergent and personal items like soap and shampoo. We didn't have enough money to cover more than mortgage, utilities, etc. I cannot say I missed out on very much. Unless we have growing children or have lost/gained weight, we need very little.
