Yes, throughout most of human history, women did need the strength and protection of men. Can you seriously imagine going on a hunt (not with a gun, mind you, with a spear) when heavily pregnant or when nursing a child. The flip side is men needed women, too. There was no way to keep a house and care for children if you were away from home all day hunting/soldiering/farming/whatever. How many ancient men worked from home?
