I think I’d have said something like: I know you’re not unaware of the harm smoking is doing your child. Is there anything at all I could do to help you? I care about you and I know you care about your baby’s health.
I know a smoker whose baby was stillborn. Her next pregnancy, she managed to quit. I also know the NICUs are full of babies born too soon and too small to smokers.
