I speak only English (with a tiny bit of Spanish and Dutch). My Dutch husband's first language was the local dialect. His second language was Dutch. He's fluent in English and German and has enough French to get by. Right after he moved here in 2006, a local dumbass wrote a letter to the editor (I was the editor, at that time) of our daily newspaper. The letter said people here should "talk American!" Oh, did we have a good laugh about that. Even my immigrant husband knew the correct phrase would be "speak English." So now we joke that everyone should "talk American" whenever this subject comes up. (I need to write a Medium piece about this. I'll add it to my list.)
