I say bring back the fanny pack (I admit I've never had one, but I constantly consider getting one) as well as the chatelaine. I live in an old house that's nothing but stairs -- it's so old it has a back staircase. And there are stairs to the basement, and to the attic, where my husband has his studio -- stairs, stairs, stairs. I've fallen down them before and I'm getting old enough that I can't do that again. I am ALWAYS carrying stuff around.
