I live in an area with very little crime. Most years we have zero murders. But a man named Larry Bright here dumped a sex worker’s body in a farm field. Her name was Sabrina Payne. She was a Black woman, and the tiny town where she was dumped, Tremont, IL, is overwhelmingly white. We knew she wasn’t local. It looked to me, in the newsroom, like a serial killer was at work, and soon it was obvious to everyone. He picked up most of his victims in Peoria, where there’s much more crime, and burned some of the women’s bodies IN HIS MOTHER’S YARD. Neighbors didn’t notice a thing! Anyway, I’ll never forget a reporter saying she was nothing but a crack whore. I reminded him “crack whores” have families, too, and ordered him to interview hers. They turned out to be deeply religious people, which I believe surprised my deeply religious reporter. Hopefully he learned something that day. Bright is now in prison. I forget how many women he murdered, but several. The two county sheriff’s offices involved and all the city police forces formed a task force and did announce to the public that someone was targeting sex workers. One who escaped from him provided the clues that put police onto him. Footnote: Another of my reporters realized he had given her a ride home years ago. That’ll give you a chill.
