I have no credit card debt, because I know there's no room at all for me to fuck up. The most money I ever made was $4k per year as the editor of a daily newspaper, and that job ended in 2015. I do a little freelancing and I write on here, and that's it. My husband's pay is so modest you probably wouldn't believe me if I told you. So I live like a pioneer woman. I cook everything from scratch. We hardly ever go out. I wear the same clothes I've been wearing for years and almost never buy anything new. I don't have a dishwasher or a clothes dryer. I drive an ancient car. I don't treat myself to special facial or hair care stuff -- I buy whatever is cheap at Target. We don't take vacations, except that we did do one night at a campground with the kids and grandkids a few weeks ago. If you decide to spend money on nothing but your mortgage, utilities, groceries, gas, car insurance and other such necessities, you can really live on very little. Of course, I live in an area where the cost of living is very low. That's the only reason I can own two houses on a household income that's considerably lower than the median. But I admit I would really, really like to just spend a little bit on a few small pleasures. My sister died at 52 this spring and all she ever did was work, work, work. She never got to enjoy herself at all. I assume you make a healthy wage -- try to strike a balance. It's good that you can enjoy yourself.
