I grew up thinking meat should be floured and fried, that potatoes should be mashed or fried, and that veggies came in a can. I learned to cook better stuff, only to then marry a vegetarian Dutch guy who dislikes cheese and have to learn to cook entirely different stuff! Yesterday I made a tuna noodle casserole (using a bechamel sauce and sauteed fresh mushrooms etc., not canned soup, which I refuse to ever buy!) for the local homeless outreach center. They'd requested a casserole so that's what I made. Hubs doesn't eat tuna, cheese or mushrooms. I watched the folks eat my casserole and realized how much I miss eating the foods of my childhood. I'm going to make another such casserole if i can find even one person to help me eat it. Your childhood tastes last forever. I may write about this.
