I actually got very good grades in school, but only by doing everything possible to avoid math. You could not today earn a college degree with as little math as I took. I got away with all sorts of things that nobody could get away with now. I was quiet and not generally a troublemaker and I did get good grades, so I was mostly allowed to do my own thing. If I had actually applied myself, who knows?
