I suspect that change mostly happens amongst people who aren't educated. It's almost impossible to hold onto a conservative mindset if you've broadened your mind. There is a very good reason cities are mostly blue and rural areas are mostly red. Educated people tend to move to cities to work the kinds of jobs that require you to be in a city. Uneducated people tend to stay in the rural areas of their birth.

It's so sad and ironic that the uneducated people in red areas have to twist themselves into a pretzel to explain this away. They claim that kids in college are brainwashed. They prefer to think that rather than accept that their kids have been enlightened.

I grew up in a red small town. I went to college and learned a lot. I get more liberal as I live more, read more and experience more.

I think "conservative" is the default for humans. If they grow, they'll become more liberal. I've heard it said that not all conservatives are stupid, but all stupid people are conservative. I've found that to be pretty close to universal.
