How privileged are you??

OK, my hospital bills: They are a lot. I don't know what you want me to do -- not have had a lumpectomy? Too late. The total cost was more than I make in a year. But sure, that's not a problem. I could just move to a whole other country to save money on medical bills. That's practical. Although I can work anywhere, my family, connections, house and my husband's job are in THIS country, and we would not be allowed to immigrate to Canada -- they don't just allow you to move right in, you know. They require you to be fairly well-off. Do you not know that? We don't speak Spanish, but whatever. Could we move to Mexico? My husband is an immigrant. I doubt we could relocate there, either. What kind of work would he do there? Sure, we'll just move to Mexico to save on medical costs!

My car is old and requires work. You believe there's public transportation where I live, but there is not. News flash! Many places have little to no public transportation. How would I drive to see my daughter (three hours away) or my dad (two hours away)? Do you think there's a bus or a train that goes there? There isn't! Even for local trips, using an Uber is expensive and not very do-able in a town like mine. The cost of using Ubers would quickly become more expensive than the thousand bucks it will take to get my old car going. You think I can spread the thousand bucks out over "a couple of months"? Really? Exactly how much do you make per month that you think a $1,000 equals two payments?? Good Lord! I don't have an extra $500 per month. If you do, be grateful.

I don't know where you live, but biking on the road is not a safe option here. My husband, who is Dutch, found that out the hard way -- he nearly died because biking is NOT SAFE here as it is in the Netherlands. I do bike out in the country for exercise, but doing it on the road in town is a good way to be killed. Walking? It's a helluva long walk to get to the doctor in the next town, and would involve walking (illegally) over a bridge and along an Interstate. I just checked: One of my doctors is a 5 hour walk away. That doesn't sound like a problem. I definitely can walk for 10 hours round trip to see the doctor. Sure!

In short, your comments are offensive and privileged. Your statement that money problems aren't real problems make it pretty clear that you've always had enough money. Money problems are real problems. And they aren't "temporary" problems for most of us. I hope you are grateful to have the resources that are, apparently, available to you.
