Here’s an alternative point of view: I make my coffee at home. We invested in a good espresso machine, even, because my husband really values coffee. I do not gain community by going to coffee shops, bars, etc. But I chat with neighbors all the time while I’m walking my dogs. I invite people over all the time, too. I have several people coming over tonight to discuss writing online. I’ll serve coffee/espresso and bring out some cheese, nuts, fruits, homemade bread. You can foster community without spending a lot of money. I grant you the espresso machine was a major splurge, but we prioritized it over getting things like a dryer or dishwasher. It has more than paid for itself. If, however, a bakery near me offered real croissants, I’d eagerly pay $6. Have you ever made those from scratch? That’s a major undertaking!
