Every newspaper journalist I have ever known has held himself/herself to exceedingly highly standards -- and anytime someone even looked like they might be about to cross a line, they were called on it. We knew we couldn't accept anything but the most token gifts. It's outrageous to see figures like Clarence Thomas grifting in a way a $9-per-hour reporter would not.
