Because they know this is probably being read on a phone, and long graffs read on a phone strain the eye.

A million years ago, in J school, I was taught to write short graffs for the same reason: Long sentences make for dense blocks of copy in newsprint.

I use shorter graffs in everything I write now -- even books -- knowing that most of my words will be consumed from a small screen.
