The Problem of American Royalty

We put them in charge of everything and this is what we get.

The aristocrats of yesteryear were just a lousy bunch of influencers.

Much like our influencers today, they were prominent for no good reason.

They spent their time dressing well and socializing, always trying to get deeper into the monarch’s inner circle.

Nobody worried whether this countess or that duke had any real talents. They did not need any. They got their positions because of their birth and usually for no other reason.

We fought a war to get rid of that sort of thing.

But it didn’t work. We like to claim that in this country, the class you were born to doesn’t matter. Everybody is equal! We have a meritocracy!

We don’t.

You’ve heard the old saying that the devil’s greatest accomplishment was convincing us he doesn’t exist?

The American system is like that, too. We keep telling everyone we live in a meritocracy and that everyone from every background has a fair chance to succeed.

But we know that’s not true.
