America is the least safe country in the developed world for childbirth. Also the most expensive. I'd have given birth in Europe if I had been able to -- and this was years before I married a European. I had my kids with my first husband, an American. I'm passionately interested in birth, and I know we do it all wrong here. Google the maternal and neonatal death rates by country. It's shocking.
